While Porsche’s loyal fan base closely scrutinized the new six-cylinder 911, initially designated “901” upon its debut at Frankfurt, it paid tribute to the outgoing 356 while forming the basis for the company’s stunning record of commercial and racing success that continues uninterrupted today. The first substantial 911 revision was applied to the “B-Series” cars produced from August 1968, with the wheelbase length slightly extended from 87.0 to 89.3 inches. Overall length remained unchanged with the rear wheels simply relocated aft. While primarily intended to stabilize handling during aggressive cornering, improved interior room was another welcome benefit. For 1968, the 911 model line grew to three, comprising the entry-level 911T or “Touring” with 110 bhp, the mid-level 911L or “Luxus” with 130 bhp, and the 911S or “Super.” All were available in both coupe and Targa body styles. For 1969, the “L” was succeeded by the 911E, with the “E” denoting the adoption of Einspritzung, the German short-form for fuel injection, which allowed Porsche to be the first German manufacturer to comply with the stricter emissions regulations enacted in America from 1968. Unlike many of its competitors during the era, Porsche actually raised the 911’s performance by offsetting lower compression ratios with an engine-displacement increase of 200 cubic centimetres to 2.2 liters for 1970’s “C-Series” cars, which were built from September 1969. A larger 225-millimeter clutch and ZF limited-slip differential handled the engine’s greater power and torque output. The D-series cars of 1971 continued to exemplify the relentless development and engineering updates applied to the 911. The flat-six engine now received small oil squirters derived from Porsche’s racing experience t
